Why You Shouldn't Wait to Seek Treatment After a Car Accident

A whopping 20 to 50 million Americans are injured or disabled in auto accidents every year, and 1.35 million people die each year. So getting into a car accident can be a really serious matter.

At Balance Wellspace, Dr. Jennifer Walker and Dr. Stephen Hussey are specialists in the treatment of auto injuries. They are here to provide you with some information on road injuries and why you shouldn’t wait after a motor vehicle accident to seek treatment.

Common car accident injuries

One of the main reasons that you shouldn’t wait to seek medical treatment is because, after a car accident, your body is in shock, so you may have internal injuries that you don’t even know about. And there are a host of injuries that you can get following a car accident that won’t even appear until later.

Whiplash

Whiplash generally happens when you’re in a car that is rear-ended. With whiplash, your head will snap backward while your body is pushed forward. This results in a neck injury that presents with symptoms of headaches, neck pain, and stiffness, particularly wirth moving your head. It’s important to get treatment for whiplash, as the pain and stiffness can worsen and spread to other areas of your body.

Bone fractures

No matter the nature of your car accident, bone fractures can occur anywhere on your body. They’re more common with high-speed crashes and should be taken quite seriously. Waiting to seek treatment for a bone fracture can result in poor or improper healing, and at worst can lead to serious illness and even death. So it’s incredibly important to seek treatment after a car accident when you have a fracture.

Soft-Tissue Injuries

Soft tissue injuries include damage to your tendons, muscles, and ligaments. They include things like bruises, sprains, strains, or stress injuries. While these are common with car accidents and may not always be chronic, they can be serious and life-threatening. So, as usual, it’s important to see a doctor right away.

Cuts and abrasions

Cuts can occur in a car accident from a number of sources. You could get hit by flying shards of broken glass or debris, or you can get them from impact with the vehicle. Cuts leave you vulnerable to infection, which can lead to serious illness.
