Neck Pain Relief

Almost everyone has experienced the symptoms of neck pain from either a ‘crick’ in the neck, or after a fender bender. Rarely does the pain from these injuries last longer than a few days. Many people experience recurrent episodes of these aches and pains because they never received a correct diagnosis in the beginning; therefore, they missed out on the best treatment that would have addressed the underlying cause of their pain.

Eventually, many patients begin to suffer with regular neck pain and then other symptoms – such as stiffness in the neck, “popping” or “cracking” sounds, pain behind the ear or up into the head (presenting as a headache or migraine), pain, numbness, or even weakness into the arms or hands. Uncorrected structural problems in the neck are a common cause of chronic pain from degenerative arthritis of the cervical spine.

Common Causes of Neck Pain

The most common causes of neck pain are musculoskeletal in nature, which means it is due to the misalignment of spinal vertebrae, discs, ligaments, nerves, and muscles. When one of the vertebrae in your neck misalign, it causes the disc to shift and bulge its material into a nerve root. This is called a bulged or herniated disc and is a common source of neck pain.

Disc problems from misalignments can occur at any spinal level, so they account for most complaints of neck pain, pain traveling down from behind the ear, or severely stiff muscles in the neck. If proper treatment is neglected, acute symptoms often eventually become the chronic pain of degenerative arthritis. (1).

Neck Pain: Worst Case Scenario

In the worst herniated disc cases, patients also suffer with other symptoms including:

⦁ Radiating pain into the head, shoulder, arm, and/or hand
⦁ Numbness in the arm, hand, and/or fingers
⦁ Weakness of the arm or hand – including loss of grip strength
⦁ Severe headaches and/or migraines

To get relief from a severe irritated or “pinched nerve” caused by a misalignment in the neck requires a physical re-alignment. If this does not occur, the disc will begin to wear unevenly and deteriorate – which is the beginning of degenerative osteoarthritis. As the spine continues to degenerate, the patient will experience more stiffness and chronic pain in the neck. As osteoarthritis progresses, the discs continue to get thinner, spurs grow and this results in a reduction in the neck active ranges of motion, more stiffness and/or tightness in the associated muscles, and worsening pain. Patients diagnosed with degenerative arthritis often complain of pain that is worse on one side of the neck and “cracking” sounds when they move their neck.

Chasing Symptoms Often Ends in Surgery

Unfortunately, many Roanoke, Virginia neck pain patients are given the wrong diagnosis so never receive the correct treatment. Traditional medicine often focuses on temporary symptom relief by reducing inflammation rather than correcting the underlying cause of the symptoms – misalignments in the spine that cause irritated or “pinched nerves.” Physical Rehabilitation is another conservative approach; however, if not done in conjunction with proper alignment of the spine, it will not address the underlying cause of pain.

Addressing the Root Cause of Neck Pain

The best treatments for acute and chronic neck pain are chiropractic alignment combined with physical rehabilitation to stabilize the spine and ultimately help prevent future misalignments. These procedures help both the structure of the spine and take pressure off irritated or “pinched nerves” so the body can heal.
Our collaborative approach offers numerous benefits for neck pain sufferers, including:
⦁ Fast relief for acute symptoms
⦁ Improved ranges of motion
⦁ Relaxation of muscles in the neck and shoulders
⦁ Non-invasive, painless treatment
⦁ Natural, healthy management of chronic pain
⦁ Slowed progression of degenerative arthritis
For chronic neck pain from arthritis, chiropractic can be very important for pain management and the best long-term option. Realignments to the spinal vertebrae improve flexibility of stiff, arthritic joints and slow the progression of degeneration in the neck. In most cases, specific rehab/physical rehabilitation is also recommended treatment to strengthen the muscles and ligaments in the neck.

Exciting New Options for Neck Pain Sufferers with Regenerative Medicine

While chiropractic and physical rehabilitation do a great job at slowing osteoarthritis in the neck, regenerative medicine is the best treatment for helping the body heal the stiff, degenerative joints. Using human tissue allograft injections into the muscles of the neck, even severely arthritic spinal joints show less inflammation, pain relief, and improved ranges of motion.
The best results for degenerative arthritis in the neck are seen when combining chiropractic, physical rehabilitation, and regenerative medicine together. This combination works extremely well for both acute and chronic neck pain symptoms
