What is Semaglutide?

You may recognize Semaglutide as the active ingredient in medications used to treat Type 2 Diabetes. In addition to its blood sugar-lowering effects, people also observed that these medications had an unexpected side effect of promoting weight loss. This led to the FDA's approval of Semaglutide as a weight loss medication in 2021, which has already helped thousands of people shed unwanted pounds.

Weight Loss Results with Semaglutide: Balance Wellspace Study Group

A common question many have asked is “just how much weight have people lost with the use of Semaglutide?” Clinical studies have shown that many people are able to lose between 12% to 20% of their starting weight with the use of Semaglutide.
Before any program is brought into our practice, our philosophy is to enlist a core group of participants to understand programs more comprehensively – from how the program should work, and to also learn and address any of the potential glitches that could arise that could impede weight loss or contribute to unnecessary side-effects.

How Does Semaglutide Work for Weight Loss?

Semaglutide is a peptide 1 agnostic (or GLP-1 agonist). GLP-1 is a natural hormone that is produced by the gastrointestinal system to help with insulin production by stimulating the pancreas, BUT it can also help signal to the brain a feeling of fullness.
Semaglutide is designed to mimic the natural hormone of GLP-1. When Semaglutide is injected, the body reacts to it as if it naturally produced the GLP-1. For weight loss, the drug slows the emptying of the stomach by binding to the receptors located in the lining of the stomach – which sends a signal of fullness to the brain. This helps reduce your food intake and decreases your appetite, two necessary components for weight loss.
You can see dramatic weight loss results with the use of Semaglutide by combining two key factors together for optimal results: insulin production (which encourages the body to break down foods and fats more efficiently) with the feeling of fullness (that comes from the slower emptying of the stomach).

How is Semaglutide Administered for Weight Loss?

Semaglutide is administered through injection for weight loss and weight management. It comes in various doses, which are gradually increased throughout your weight loss program. Your medical provider will monitor your progress monthly, allowing for tailored adjustments to your Semaglutide dosage to best meet your individual needs and help you achieve optimal results.

Are There Side Effects from Using Semaglutide for Weight Loss?

Considering that Semaglutide works directly with the gastrointestinal system, it is no surprise that the most common side effects are gastrointestinal in nature. Some of the most common side effects experienced by those who use Semaglutide for weight loss include:

Even though there are some side effects with the use of Semaglutide, it is still extremely safe to use for weight loss. In fact, it has fewer side effects than other weight loss medications available on the market. Many of these side-effects can be avoided through lifestyle modifications and communication with the medical provider to ensure appropriate strength of the medication is used. There are also several over-the-counter and anti-nausea medications available to assist if you were to experience side-effects with the medication. Our regular monitoring with slow increases of dosage also helps control side effects. If you experience side effects, your provider at Balance Wellspace can adjust the dosing as needed.
