Types of Headaches

Tension Headaches

Tension-type headaches are the most common type of headache that occurs and are often referred to as “stress headaches.” They commonly present as a dull, band-like vice around the head. The characteristics of a tension headache include a slower onset, the head usually hurts on both sides, the pain may involve the back part of the neck or head, the pain usually does not pulsate, there is typically no nausea or vomiting, and the severity is mild to moderate.

The cause of Tension Headaches is not completely understood and often there are many triggers that complicate the diagnosis, including family history and tight muscles that contribute to vasoconstriction of blood vessels.

Depending on where the tight muscle is may also dictate treatment – such as the Temporomandibular Jaw (TMJ) supportive muscles, neck, and/or shoulders.

Cervicogenic Headaches

With cervicogenic headaches, the neck is the primary source of the problem, yet the pain is often perceived in one or more areas of the head and/or face. Although the causes of cervicogenic headaches are not completely understood, a commonality includes misaligned vertebrae in the neck that are irritating or “pinching” the nerves that supply the supportive musculature – including muscles in the neck, head, jaw, and shoulders. Other contributing factors that have been isolated in patients suffering with cervicogenic headaches include loss of cervical curvature, neck stiffness, family history of headaches, TMJ issues and stress.

Migraines

Migraines are by far the most severe headaches, and truthfully, also some of the most elusive types of headaches. Migraines can stem from multiple possible causes and oftentimes, we see several combinations that mix for the perfect storm. These contributing factors could include stress, hormone imbalances, allergies, food sensitivities, medication side effects, nutritional deficiencies, and pinched nerves.

A migraine is a headache that is usually located on one side of the head and can cause severe throbbing pain or even a pulsing sensation. Migraines are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, inability to concentrate, and extreme sensitivity to light and/or sound.

Fortunately, regardless of the type of headache or migraine you might have, most patients with recurrent headaches and many migraine sufferers get lasting relief with the collaborative approach to care we offer at Balance Wellspace Integrative Medicine.

Note: If you are experiencing a sudden onset of a severe headache, it is important to have a neurological consultation with imaging (Brain MRI/CT) to rule out a more serious condition, such as a brain tumor.

Addressing the Root Cause of Headaches

Given the complexity of many headache cases, it is essential to understand the type of headache the patient suffers with and other factors that exist likely contributing to the headaches. Therefore, we will often examine the neck for misalignments, inflammation, and radiographic findings, as well as the supportive musculature. Based on the patient’s history, we will likely explore lifestyle factors and even look at blood work to look at markers that could contribute to pain.

Exciting New Options for Headache Sufferers with Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine is the best treatment for helping support the healing process. Using human tissue allograft injections into the myofascial trigger points can help decrease overall inflammation, provide pain relief, and assist in dissolving myofascial trigger points (especially the suboccipital area) that often accompany headaches.
